Flying Allegiant for the First Time? Here’s What You Need to Know

Have you heard of Allegiant Airlines? It’s a budget airline that flies out of smaller, non-hub regional airports in the United States. And just like other budget airlines, Allegiant has a fee for pretty much everything — and that includes baggage fees. If you’re considering booking your next flight with Allegiant Air, there’s a couple things you should be aware of. From Allegiant carry-on size to what size bag is free on Allegiant, this article will break down what you need to know before you fly.

Allegiant carry-on size and personal item size

Allegiant Personal Item Size

Let’s start with what’s free on Allegiant Air. Every passenger can bring one personal item, such as a backpack, purse or briefcase, for free. Personal item dimensions can’t exceed 18 in x 14 in x 8 in, and it must be stored completely under the seat in front of you.

According to Allegiant Air’s baggage policy, you can also bring these items for free:

  • Food for immediate consumption
  • Mobility aids and devices, such as crutches, wheelchairs, walkers, canes, etc.
  • An umbrella
  • A coat or jacket
  • One box or bag of duty-free merchandise
  • One item of reading material
  • A diaper bag

Allegiant Carry-On Size & Fees

Allegiant carry-on dimensions are 22 in x 16 in x 10 in, including wheels, handles, pockets and decorations. That makes the Allegiant carry-on size slightly bigger than United and American, but smaller than Spirit Airlines. Allegiant Air doesn’t specify a carry-on weight limit.

Wondering how strict Allegiant is with carry-ons? Like most airlines, it depends on the airport and the agent. However, if you want to avoid getting stopped by a gate agent and paying a $75 fee, make sure your carry-on is the right size.

Allegiant carry-on bag fees range from $10-$75. What you pay all depends on the flight route and when you add a carry-on bag to your ticket. Here’s an example of what a carry-on would cost from LAX to Memphis.

You also have the option to choose from one of Allegiant Air’s bundles, which include popular services that are frequently purchased together, such as carry-on or checked bags and seat selections. Depending on your flight, bundling can save you more than 30% than buying items separately.

One thing to keep in mind: all Allegiant Air baggage fees are non-refundable, so choose wisely!

Allegiant Air Pet-in-Cabin Policy

Want to bring your dog or cat with you on your Allegiant flight? No problem. Allegiant Air’s pet policy states all pets must be transported in a soft or hard-sided carrier, although they recommend soft-sided. The pet carrier cannot be larger than 19 in x 16 in x 9 in, and it must be leak-proof.

Naturally, there’s a fee to travel with your pet. A non-refundable fee of $50 per segment and per carrier applies for all pets.

Allegiant also points out that a pet carrier counts as one of the two items you can bring on the aircraft. That means you can travel with a pet carrier and a personal item or a pet carrier and a carry-on; not both.
