Hotel Elefant Salzburg: What It’s Really Like to Stay at the Closest Hotel to Mozart’s Birthplace
Salzburg is known as the “City of Mozart.” And what better way to experience it than staying as close to Mozart as possible? Located 180 feet from Mozart’s Birthplace, Hotel Elefant Salzburg is a popular recommendation in travel forums and Facebook groups. It’s also highly rated on multiple booking platforms and praised for its central location in Altstadt Salzburg.
If you’re reading this, you’ve probably read the same comments I did and added Hotel Elefant to your Salzburg hotel short list. But now you’re wondering if you can trust those one or two-sentence reviews. After staying there for three nights, I’ve written the review I wish I’d read before I booked.

My Experience Staying at Hotel Elefant Salzburg
I stayed at Hotel Elefant for three nights in October 2026. I made my reservation for a Premium Double Room on August 6, about two months before my trip. Even though I was traveling during shoulder season, room availability was already limited. So if you want to stay at Hotel Elefant, and I think you should, book early.
One thing that confuses a lot of people, including myself, is how Hotel Elefant is marketed. There are two properties that are part of the same hotel: Hotel Elefant and Hotel Elefant Family Business. They’re even listed separately on hotel booking websites.
In 2019, Hotel Elefant expanded into the building next door, connecting the two properties with corridors and staircases. Both properties share the same entrance, reception and other hotel facilities. Why they couldn’t have the same name is one of Salzburg’s greatest mysteries.
So what’s the difference between Hotel Elefant and Hotel Elefant Family Business? The original Hotel Elefant has more traditional rooms, while the newer Hotel Elefant Family Business offers modern, less expensive rooms. That’s it.
I booked Hotel Elefant Family Business mostly because it was cheaper, but I also liked the look of the rooms.
The Location
Hotel Elefant is located in Salzburg’s Altstadt, also known as Old Town. And it’s about as central as you can get.
As the title of this review suggests, Hotel Elefant is the closest hotel to Mozart’s Birthplace (Mozarts Geburtshaus). And it’s true. In about a minute, you can be standing in front of the bright yellow building where Austria’s most famous composer was born.
If you walk in the other direction, you can reach Salzburg Cathedral in about 4 minutes or the Festungsbahn to Hohensalzburg Fortress in about 7 minutes.
The only downside of staying at Hotel Elefant, or any hotel in Altstadt, is the distance from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof. For me, it was a manageable 20-minute walk, even with luggage. I also made the trip to the train station four times during my stay, so it was obviously a non-issue. However, if you’re arriving by train, you can also take public transportation or a taxi.
Getting to the Room
When I was deciding where to stay in Salzburg, I went pretty deep in the Hotel Elefant reviews. I kept reading comments about getting to the room. One person even described the journey as “labyrinthian.” I’m not saying those comments pushed me over the edge to book, but they definitely piqued my interest.
It turns out, they weren’t wrong. Here are the steps I had to take to get to my room at Hotel Elefant Family Business:
🛗 Take the first elevator to the 1st floor (you could also take the stairs)
⬅️ Turn left out of the elevator
⬇️ Walk down 5 steps
➡️ Turn right and walk to the end of the hallway to a second elevator
🛗 Take the second elevator to the 5th floor
When the man at reception gave me these directions, I couldn’t help but laugh. As ridiculous as it sounds, it wasn’t bad. After doing it twice, I had the route memorized. But when I did it in reverse, I kept wanting to turn right into a closet instead of heading toward the stairs to reception.
The long trek to the rooms only seems to be the case for Hotel Elefant Family Business. This is probably because it’s the newer part of the hotel, which is connected to the original building through a series of hallways and staircases.
If you don’t want to memorize directions to get to your room, you might want to book the original Hotel Elefant instead. None of the reviews I read mentioned having the same issue.
My Room at Hotel Elefant Family Business
The biggest surprise about staying at Hotel Elefant Family Business was the room. European hotel rooms are known for being small or cramped; not this one!
According to the booking website, the Premium Double Room at Hotel Elefant Family Business measures 269 square feet and could sleep up to 4 guests. I’m not good with math, and my spatial reasoning is terrible, but it felt like staying in a small apartment rather than a hotel room.
On one side of the room was the bed. The website said it was a queen, but I swear it was bigger. I even made a comment about how it felt like me and my boyfriend were sleeping in separate beds, that’s how big it felt. The bed itself was really comfortable, and based on my boyfriend’s snoring, I think he would agree.
The opposite side of the room included a couch, a desk, a not-so-mini fridge and a closet with all the traditional hotel fixins’: a safe, slippers and robes. I also liked how it had hardwood floors because carpet in hotel rooms is always suss.
My room was located on the top floor, so I got a mini aerial view of Salzburg. I didn’t hear any street noise from below, and I never heard any noise outside the room.
My only gripe was the entrance to the room, which had a subtle incline that was easy to miss. I had a Three’s Company moment when I tripped walking out.
The Bathroom
The bathroom wasn’t anything special. The size was decent, but the counter space around the sink was limited. (I think my boyfriend accused me of hogging all the space.)
The shower, which looked like one of those futuristic teleporting tubes, had some minor flaws. For example, my boyfriend noticed that the door was partially off the track, so some water leaked onto the bathroom floor. The water pressure and temperature were great, though.
The bathroom definitely gets zero stars for the hotel-provided hairdryer. It was one of those European wall-mounted hairdryers with a hose. Every time I see one, I want to yank it off the wall.
If I had to describe the power of the hairdryer, I’d say it was the equivalent of a warm summer breeze. I had to take three breaks while drying my hair because it kept shutting off from overheating. So if you’re someone like me who has a lot of hair, give yourself enough time to dry it.
There was a sign in the bathroom explicitly asking guests not to use the towels to remove makeup. Rather than putting their full faith in their guests to follow the request, the hotel provided single-use face wipes. That was a nice touch.
The Service and Staff
I didn’t have many interactions with the Hotel Elefant staff, but the three times I did, they were all friendly and helpful. For starters, the employee who checked us in gave flawless directions to the room.
We didn’t receive the Salzburg Guest Mobility Ticket at check-in, so we had to go down to the front desk to ask about it. The man at the front desk printed them out for us after we provided our names, dates of birth, and departure date.
Public Service Announcement: The Salzburg Guest Mobility Ticket gives overnight visitors free access to public transportation throughout Salzburg province, including buses and regional trains. It’s included with the mandatory mobility fee, so you don’t need to purchase it separately.
And when we checked out, they had no problem letting us store our luggage at the front desk until we were ready to head to the Hauptbahnhof.
Should You Stay at Hotel Elefant Salzburg?
If you’re trying to decide where to stay in Salzburg, Hotel Elefant Family Business should be a top contender. It may not be a perfect hotel, but in my opinion, it’s pretty close. It has an unbeatable location in the heart of Altstadt, the rooms are spacious, and the staff is friendly. I’d stay at Hotel Elefant again in a heartbeat.
